Ditadura e democracia, legado da memória. (Dictatorship and democracy, the legacy of memory).

Presentation by Fernando Rosas and Riccardo Marchi.

Moderation by Maria do Céu Lopes.

Ditadura e democracia (Dictatorship and democracy) The dictatorships that marked the European twentieth century gave way to new democracies, but the authoritarian values and attitudes continue to mark contemporary societies. The Portuguese democracy was born from the rupture with a long authoritarian experience and in a very singular way. How did the Portuguese deal with their authoritarian past? How did the democratic institutions seek to legitimise the new Portugal in the concert of democracies? Founded on extensive research and based on testimonies from people who lived part of the 48 years of the Estado Novo, this book seeks to make the portrait and balance of past policies in Portugal. About the author Filipa Raimundo is a researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon and Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science of the ISCTE-IUL. She graduated in Sociology from NOVA University of Lisbon in 2004 and concluded her PhD in Political and Social Sciences at the European University Institute of Florence in 2012. Her research interests include the legacies of authoritarianism, democratisation and the quality of democracy.

A tribute to the generation of fathers and mothers born in the 1930s who, without seeking a place in history, political or any other kind of protagonism, never resigned, risked their lives, went to prison, went into exile, and were persecuted so that we can live today in a better country.
