António de Jesus Branco

(Carregosa, 25-12-1906 – Tarrafal, Santiago Island, Cape Verde, 28-12-1942)

António de Jesus Branco was born in Carregosa, municipality of Oliveira de Azeméis, and worked as a docker in the port of Lisbon. Detained for enquiries on 12 July 1936 at the police station, almost a month later, he was taken to the 1st precinct. On August 27, the Surveillance and State Defence Police (PVDE) moved him to a new place of imprisonment, the Prison of Aljube, in Lisbon, where he remained for about a month and a half. In October 1936, he was transferred to the Concentration Camp of Tarrafal, in Cape Verde. He spent four of the six years he was there bedridden, sick with malaria and tuberculosis. Increasingly debilitated by disease and the lack of medical assistance, he died in 1942, at the age of 36.
