Luiza Sarsfield Cabral
Biography
Luiza Sarsfield Cabral was born in Miragaia on December 6, 1941. She belonged to the Catholic School Youth (JEC), the Catholic University Youth (JUC), and the Confronto Cooperative in Porto. She studied Germanic Philology at the Faculty of Arts in Lisbon and participated in the university protests of 1962. She collaborated with the cultural cooperative PRAGMA, the Right to Information newsletter, and the Cadernos Gedoc, and supported the passage to Spain of young people seeking to escape military service. She worked with the residents who occupied the Bom Sucesso neighborhood in Odivelas and participated in the literacy program for the residents of Casal Ventoso in Lisbon. As part of the movement of progressive Catholic groups, an archive of political and anti-colonial documentation was installed in an annex of her house to support the publication of the Anticolonial Bulletin (BAC). On November 26, 1973, she was arrested and taken to Caxias, where she was subjected to intense interrogations and sleep torture for four days and four nights. More than a month of isolation followed. Released on February 23, 1974, she was prevented from resuming her teaching career. After the April 25 Revolution, she joined the Socialist Party (PS).
