Duarte Nuno Pinto
Biography:
Duarte Nuno Alves Clímaco Pinto was born on June 6, 1939, in Torres Vedras, into a monarchist family with whom he would later fall out for political reasons.
At 18, he began working as a laborer, became politically active, and became close to the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP), distributing Avante! and participating in meetings. In 1962, he joined the first group of Portuguese students to travel to the USSR, where he remained for about two years. Returning to Portugal, in hiding, he participated in the organization of the workers’ sector in eastern Lisbon and managed a clandestine printing shop in Camarate.
He was arrested by the PIDE (Institutional Detectives of the Portuguese Democratic Party) in December 1964, following a complaint from the PCP leader responsible for the student sector in Lisbon, and subjected to several sessions of sleep torture. He was sentenced in a full court to three years in prison and three years of security measures, of which he served about half. After his time in Aljube, he served his sentence in Peniche Prison. He was released in 1969 and began working as a factory manager. He dedicated himself to union activity and served as president of the general assembly of the Timber Workers’ Union.
On April 25, 1974, he participated in the mobilization for the release of political prisoners at Peniche Fort. He served on the Administrative Committee for the Torres Vedras City Council. He served as a councilor at Loures City Council, president of the Board of Directors of Loures Municipal Services (1983-1990), and president of the Board of Directors of the Association of Municipalities for Natural Gas.
